Animal Shelter

Volunteer Program

The Lincoln County Animal Shelter relies on our compassionate and generous volunteers who participate in virtually every aspect of shelter operations. Whether you walk dogs at your shelter, stuff envelopes for an educational mailing, help with outreach, or assist with a fundraising event, you can make a difference in the lives of animals. Please download a foster/volunteer application and deliver or mail to us at the address below.

At this time, we are only able to accept volunteers who are 18 or older. Animal lovers under 18 may come pet and play with the cats in our catteries along with an adult.  There are a number of ways kids can help the shelter offsite, including:

  • Make felt dog rope toys
  • Raise funds through a garage sale, lemonade stand, car wash, or bake sale
  • Build dog houses that we can distribute to outdoor dogs in need
  • Host a golf tournament, art show, or pet photo contest
  • Organize a pet food drive
  • Collect Pennies for Pets

Volunteer at the Shelter

Our volunteers cuddle cats, walk dogs, clean kennels, create and distribute posters, help plan events, and enter licensing data.  We are able to utilize everyone's skills and talents, and welcome assistance every day of the year!

Foster an Animal in Need

We rely on foster homes to help care for kittens, puppies, and animals recovering from medical conditions. Since we do not euthanize animals for space, foster homes allow us to take in, care for, and find new homes for many more animals than we are able to care for at the Shelter.

Please read our foster manual to learn more.

Here are just a few of the benefits of volunteering:

1. Be part of the solution. You'll join a network of people working to make the world safe and more humane for all living creatures. You'll make the jobs of everyone working for animals a little easier by lending a hand and spreading the message of responsible pet ownership and animal protection.

2. Get warm fuzzies. You'll never find a more grateful and accepting comrade than an animal you've comforted.

3. Keep good company. You'll make lots of new friends—and not just the four-legged kind. Working side by side with people who share similar interests can forge lifelong friendships.

4. Meet the new you. You'll discover skills you never knew you had, and you may be surprised at what you're capable of achieving.

5. Gain new skills. You'll learn things that may lead you to the career—or career change—of your dreams. Employers look favorably on time spent in volunteer service.

6. Enjoy a wagging tail, a purr, and a smile. Didn't someone once say that the best things in life are free?
