Incident: Lost Hiker Found By Lincoln County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team
Date Occurred: March 11, 2012
Time Occurred: Approximately 6:30 pm
Location: South Fogarty Creek State Park, Depoe Bay, Oregon

Summary:

On March 11, 2012 at approximately 6:24pm, the Lincoln County 911 Dispatch Center (LinCom) received a call from 39 year old Depoe Bay resident Gabriel Shane Pilgrim reporting he became lost in the woods south of the Fogarty Creek State Park during a day hike, and was unable to find his way out.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Sergeant Adam Shanks and Forest Patrol Deputy Gary Davey responded to the scene. Deputies, assisted by an Oregon State Police Fish & Game Trooper, started searching the area by vehicle and on foot in an attempt to locate Pilgrim. During initial search efforts, Pilgrim's cellular phone lost power and communication with LinCom.

Due to lost communication, darkness, and dangerous weather conditions forecasted for the following morning, Lincoln County Search & Rescue (SAR) was activated to search the area. SAR deployed two ground teams in the area to search for Pilgrim. At 11:25pm, SAR ground team members located Pilgrim in a wooded area nearly 1/2 mile south of the Fogarty Creek State Park. Pilgrim was escorted out of the woods to safety without incident.
