On March 3, 2012 Lincoln County Sheriff's Forest Deputy Gary Davey was patrolling the Harlan area after finding signs of truffle hunters harvesting on private property without permits. At about 12:30PM, Deputy Davey contacted 49 year old Salem resident John Bolton and his son, 21 year old son Jessee Bolton, who were found harvesting Oregon Black Truffles on Hancock Timber Resources property without permits. Deputy Davey seized approximately 17 ounces of truffles and issued both subjects criminal citations for Illegal Cutting/Transporting of A Minor Timber Product Without A Permit. Both subjects were released at the scene.
