Summary:
On May 1, 2011, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of possible fraudulent credit card activity through the assistance of a Hearing Impaired Relay Service.
The complainant, a merchant at the Salishan Market Place, reported receiving a call from a Hearing Impaired Relay Service. The service provided needed communication between the presumed hearing impaired patron and merchant. The patron ordered $2,500 worth of goods from the business, which is not unusual for the merchant. The merchant processed the order with a credit card provided by the patron and became suspicious. The merchant contacted the credit card issuer, who reported the credit purchase was fraudulent and was not conducted by the card holder.
Upon investigation the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office learned there a current credit card scam with suspected criminals using the Hearing Impaired Relay Service as a form of communication to merchants.
The Hearing Impaired Relay Service is a needed line of communication for those who have hearing as well as vocal disabilities. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office would like the public to remember criminals may use any means of deception to gain the goods they are after. If you are suspicious of possible fraudulent activities involving credit cards contact the credit card issuer.
