Summary:
On April 12th 2011 at about 2:20 am, Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Cliff Sites attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a 2000 Chrysler 300 after observing the vehicle turn onto NW 3rd St from Hwy 101 in Newport without signaling.
The vehicle accelerated away from Deputy Sites and turned northbound onto NW Nye St. Deputy Sites pursued the vehicle up northwest Nye St, east on NW 8th, then southbound onto Hwy 101 and westbound on NW 6th St. The vehicle nearly struck Oregon State Police Trooper Ian McKay's patrol vehicle as he joined the pursuit.
The vehicle exceeded 60 MPH during the pursuit which ended when the driver crashed into two parked cars and a tree as he attempted to turn onto NW Nye St from NW 6th. No one else was involved in the crash.
Deputy Sites and Trooper McKay arrested the driver, Brett Parrett, age 41 of Newport, as he exited his vehicle. Parrett admitted to being intoxicated and that his driver license is currently suspended for a previous DUII. Parrett was not injured in the crash, but did exhibit signs of intoxication.
Parrett was transported to the Lincoln County Jail. Following an investigation for DUII, Parrett provided a breath sample of 0.15 % BAC.
Parrett was lodged at the jail on charges of DUII; ATTEMPT TO ELUDE POLICE; RECKLESS DRIVING; RECKLESS ENDANGERING; DRIVING WHILE SUSPENDED- Misdemeanor; CRIMINAL MISCHIEF I and CRIMINAL MISCHIEF II with a total bail of $175,000. Parrett's vehcile was seized.
