Incident: Dog Attacks Child
Date Occurred: Apr 04, 2011
Time Occurred: Approximately 10:45 am
Location: Residence in the 500 block of NE 1st Street in Otter Rock

Summary:

On April 4, 2011, at about 1045 hours the Depoe Bay Fire Department, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office deputies and Animal Services Deputies were dispatched to a report of a dog attack of a small child at a residence in the 500 block of NE 1st Street in Otter Rock. The female child, Eden Bailey, who turns 2 years old tomorrow, sustained life threatening injuries to her head and neck and her mother, Kari Wallace, had also received less serious injuries while saving Eden from the dog. Both were transported via Pacific West Ambulance to the Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport where both received medical care. At the time of this media release both were reported to be stable, however Eden is scheduled for emergency transport out of the area for additional medical care.

The dog that attacked Eden is a 3 year old American Bulldog and is a pet of the family who resides at the home. Eden and Kari had recently moved there and the dog owners were gone from the home at the time of the attack. The dog owners were later located by Sheriff's deputies who assisted in transporting the dog to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter where the dog is being held. The owners released ownership of the dog to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. The dog is current on licensing and vaccination. An investigation by Animal Services did not reveal any previous attacks by the dog. The dog will be checked for rabies, which is standard procedure- rabies is NOT suspected, and has been euthanized per the owners' request.

It is unknown why the dog attacked Eden and no one witnessed the initial attack, but after Kari was able to get Eden from the dog, the dog attempted to continue the attack. Kari was able to leave the house with Eden and close the dog inside.

No criminal action taken.
