Summary:
On July 7, 2010 at approximately 10:03pm, Lincoln County Sheriff's Sergeant Adam Shanks was dispatched to a single vehicle traffic crash on Yaquina Bay Road near Criteser Moorage just west of Toledo, Oregon. Upon arrival, Sergeant Shanks discovered a silver 2001 Volkswagon hatchback lying on its top in a field approximately 40 feet off of Yaquina Bay Road. The vehicle was unoccupied.
Investigation revealed the vehicle had been traveling westbound on Yaquina Bay Road when the driver lost control and drove off the roadway into a log fence which caused the vehicle to roll before coming to rest on its top. Residents in the area who responded to the scene immediately after hearing the crash advised no one was around when they arrived.
With assistance from members of the Toledo Police and Fire Departments, Sheriff's Deputies conducted a preliminary search of the area for the vehicle occupants but were unable to locate anyone. Fire and Rescue personnel then cleared from the scene.
At approximately 12:01am, Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies located an adult male and a 17 year old female hiding in a public restroom at a nearby Port of Toledo park. During contact with the subjects, it was determined the male, identified as 40 year old Brian D. Hollis of Newport, was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash and the 17 year old female was the passenger.
PacWest Ambulance was dispatched to the scene to treat the female passenger who complained of neck and back pain as a result of the crash. She was subsequently transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport for treatment of her injuries.
Hollis was taken into custody by Sergeant Shanks for one count of Fail to perform the duties of a driver (felony), Reckless driving, and Criminal mischief II. Hollis was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail. His bail was set at $80,000. Hollis was issued additional traffic citations for Driving while suspended and Driving uninsured.
Excessive speed is suspected as a factor relating to the cause of the traffic crash.
