SHELTER MANAGER RETIRES
Verna Dee Kaminski, known to all as Dee, is retiring from the Sheriff’s Office after 35 years of county service.
Dee was sworn in as a Dog Control Officer by Sheriff Hockema on October 14, 1974. She was appointed and served as the Animal Shelter Manager from January 1978 until August 1993 when budget shortfalls convinced Dee to accept a position as a Civil Deputy. The revenue situation improved and on December 1, 1995 and Dee was appointed the interim Animal Shelter Manager until six weeks later when the assignment was made permanent.
Dee has dedicated over three decades of her life to serving man’s best friend – dogs. Of course she has also served the needs of homeless cats. Dee has been responsible for educating countless numbers of pet owners on proper pet care. She has found homes for countless numbers of dogs and cats as well.
Sergeant Barbara Perry has been reassigned from her duties in the jail to fill the shelter manager position on an interim basis. “We will evaluate the shelter operation with the assistance of our partners from Friends of the Lincoln County Animal Shelter and the Central Coast Humane Society”, stated Sheriff Dennis Dotson. “Our shelter is facing a critical time to secure funding for future operations.” “It is our responsibility to create and implement a business plan that provides for an efficient operation for that future, and I am confident that will occur”, stated Sheriff Dotson.
