At about 2:56 am, 1 July 2009, a Patrol Sergeant with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office saw a vehicle travelling southbound on US Hwy 101 at Beverly Beach Campground. The vehicle suddenly slowed, turned its emergency flashers on, and coasted to a stop. The Sergeant contacted the driver, later identified as David Charles Wooten, 37 years old of Salem, Oregon, who said he had just run out of gas. While talking to Wooten the Sergeant noticed there were no license plates on the vehicle, no temporary registration, and a rear passenger window had been broken out of the vehicle. The Sergeant also noticed two dealer stickers on the floorboard of the vehicle from Power KIA in Salem. Wooten was detained and Salem Police Department was contacted and later confirmed the vehicle was stolen from Power KIA’s lot. Wooten was placed under arrest for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Driving While Suspended (Misdemeanor) and lodged at the Lincoln County Jail with a bail of $65,000.00.
