Summary:
On June 04, 2009 at approximately 1:35am, Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a burglary in progress at a residence on NE 100th Drive in Newport, Oregon. The Lincoln County 911 Dispatch Center received a frantic 911 call from an adult female saying someone just tried breaking into the back door of her and her husband's residence. When Deputies arrived, it was determined the suspect had already fled the scene. During the investigation, Deputies learned that in addition to attempting entry into the residence, the suspect broke into a large shop building by breaking a window. Two vehicles inside the shop had been tampered with. Copious amounts of blood was discovered outside the broken window, inside the shop and inside the two vehicles. Two more vehicles outside the shop had also been tampered with and more blood was found on two doors of the main residence.
While deputies were processing the crime scene another deputy located a male subject walking along Highway 101 just south of the crime scene. The deputy, who was driving an unmarked patrol vehicle, was being flagged down by the male subject so he stopped to investigate. Blake Alexander Becktold, 20, of Newport, Oregon, was wearing a t-shirt and boxer shorts while carrying a pair of blood soaked pants. Becktold had a severe laceration to one of his forearms and could not account for his recent whereabouts. The deputy detained Becktold until the investigating deputy could respond.
At the conclusion of the investigation, Becktold was placed under arrest for the crimes of Attempted Burglary in the First Degree, Burglary in the Second Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, and four counts of Unlawful Entry to a Motor Vehicle. Becktold was transported to the Lincoln County Jail where he was lodged on $275,000.00 bail. This investigation is continuing and additional charges are anticipated.
The Newport Police Department assisted with the investigation.
