Incident: Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Grant
Date Occurred: April 3, 2009
Time Occurred:
Location: Lincoln County

Summary:

Your Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is one of nineteen police departments, inlcuding the Lincoln City Police Department, and five county sheriff offices in Oregon that have been awarded over 86 thousand dollars in overtime grants to improve safety for pedestrians. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office was awarded $4,480.00 by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition.

The purpose of the grant is to enable enforcement agencies to highlight the importance of pedestrian safety through crosswalk enforcement operations.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office has participated in the program since 2007. Sgt. Mark Meister and Deputy Barry Bruster administer the grant for the Sheriff's Office. Sergeant Meister views the grant as an integral tool to increase safety for pedestrians. Deputy Bruster stated, “Every operation that has been conducted in the past has shown the need for more education of drivers for the need to slow down or stop and allow pedestrians time to cross the street.” The operations also increases awareness of the offense of a vehicle passing by another vehicle that is stopped at a crosswalk.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office has scheduled pedestrian enforcement operations for Waldport, Yachats, and Depoe Bay this summer. Media releases will be made prior to and following each operation. A Sheriff's Office tip of the week regarding pedestrian laws is posted at www.lincolncountysheriff.net.
