Incident: Traffic Safety Enforcement Blitz
Date Occurred: February 9-22, 2009
Time Occurred:
Location: Lincoln County Highways

Summary:

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office will be working to enforce traffic occupant protection and other traffic related laws during the Three Flags safety belt enforcement blitz scheduled February 9th through February 22nd. The enforcement blitz is funded by the Oregon Department of Transportation and is a coordinated effort involving agencies throughout Oregon and Washington. The Three Flags program provides funding for enhanced traffic enforcement during the scheduled blitz.

The February Three Flags blitz runs in conjunction with the national Child Passenger Safety Week, making the main focus of the blitz child passenger restraints such as car seats and boosters or belts. The Oregon Department of Transportation reports that the child passenger safety seat misuse rate is 82.3%. Misuses are typically due to incorrectly installed safety seats, safety seats that are not installed tight enough onto the car seat to provide proper protection, and improperly adjusted harness straps to name a few. Sadly, 1,354 child passengers under age eight were injured and six were killed in motor vehicle crashes in Oregon last year (ODOT Crash Analysis & Reporting).
