Incident: Newport High School Inmate Presentation
Date Occurred: January 20, 2009
Time Occurred:
Location: Newport High School

Summary:

On January 20th, 2009, the Lincoln County Sheriffs Office, in conjunction with the Lincoln County School Board and Newport High School, teamed up for the second year in the row to bring the students a candid and real life look at both the benefit and consequences of choices and decision making.

Members of the Lincoln County Sheriffs Office Jail Division and an inmate volunteer from the Lincoln County Jail attended several health classes consisting mostly of freshman and sophomore students for “A day in the life” presentation to the students. The deputies and inmate remained at the high school making presentations to approximately 225 students in a 6.5 hour period of time.

The classes were conducted in an open forum style environment to promote questions and give the opportunity for students to observe, listen and learn. The open forum provided a positive atmosphere for both the inmate and student to communicate and share some of their experiences and any negative impact past association with drugs or alcohol has had on his/her life.

The topics discussed were primarily focused on drug awareness, the judicial system and the negative physical, social and emotional impact of drug abuse and addiction.

The inmate volunteer, Mr. Jermey Gruver, has currently been released from custody and is awaiting entry into a drug rehabilitation center in Ontario Oregon.

Schools interested in a presentation can contact Deputy Steve Frey at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Jail Division at (541) 265-4277 or E-Mail at: sfrey@co.lincoln.or.us.
