Summary:
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office successfully completed a Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation on Highway 34 in Waldport on September 10th, 2008. The local enforcement effort was funded by a traffic safety grant from The Bicycle Transportation Alliance and Willamette Pedestrian Coalition. The purpose of the operation was to raise driver and public awareness regarding pedestrian safety. The operation involved the use of a decoy pedestrian crossing in the marked crosswalk at Highway 34 and Bay St. in Waldport. Traffic cones were deployed on the highway indicating where the operation began and ended for motorists traveling both directions through the operation. The operation lasted 4 hours.
Deputies issued 12 citations to motorists who failed to stop for the pedestrian and 13 warnings were issued. There were 3 citations issued to motorists for other traffic violations. 196 motorists correctly stopped for the pedestrian resulting in a compliance rate of 87%.
One motorist who failed to stop for the pedestrian was arrested for DUII. The driver, Julie Tramp, age 36 of Seal Rock, drove through the operation on her way to the Waldport Elementary School to pick up her child when she was arrested. Tramp's blood alcohol level was .15%. In addition to the citation for Failure to Stop for a Pedestrian, Tramp was also issued a citation for Open Container.
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office has scheduled one more Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation for 2008 to be conducted in Waldport on September 17th.
