Summary:

Sheriff Dennis Dotson is pleased to announce that an Animal Service Deputy (often referred to as an Animal Control Officer) has been hired to patrol the unincorporated areas of Lincoln County.

Prior to July 1, 1993, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office employed two Animal Services Deputies. The Cities of Lincoln City and Newport contracted for 20 hours of Animal Services each, which paid for one of the positions. The other was funded by the Sheriff’s Office.

On July 1, 1993 the Sheriff’s Office eliminated an Animal Services Deputy due to a lack of funding. This left only one Animal Services Deputy, which was funded by Lincoln City and Newport to provide service for their cities. For the past four years, Jackie Beckstead has been providing this service.

For citizens who live in unincorporated areas of the county, this meant a patrol deputy would be dispatched to animal complaints. Unfortunately in many cases, the deputies were busy on higher priority criminal calls and not readily able to respond to animal nuisance calls such as barking dogs and dogs running at large.

In July of this year the Sheriff’s Office was able to add an Animal Services Deputy to again provide enhanced animal services to citizens who live in unincorporated areas of the county.

On July 01, 2008 Calie Denue was hired as a new Animal Services Deputy. Denue had been a Reserve Patrol Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office since 2006. Sheriff Dotson stated, "Calie has been a very active reserve deputy and spent many hours patrolling Lincoln County with our deputies.” “She has great character and will be an asset to the Sheriff's Office."

In July of this year, Jackie Beckstead was offered and accepted a position as an investigator with the National Humane Society. Jackie expressed regret in leaving what she describes as “her family” at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office so in August she will be sworn in as a Reserve Animal Services Deputy. Her last day of employment with the Sheriff’s Office was July 31, 2008.

On August 4, 2008 Sheriff Dotson was pleased to hire Kerri Tyler to replace Jackie Beckstead’s vacant position. Tyler served as the Animal Services Deputy for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office until July of 2004 when she was offered a position with the Humane Society of Oregon. Tyler decided she missed Lincoln County and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and is very excited to return. Tyler brings back a wealth of knowledge and experience. She was an investigator for the Humane Society and was one of the first to respond to the area affected by Hurricane Katrina to assist in animal rescues.

Sheriff Dotson stated, “We are very proud of Jackie and her accomplishments during her time with the Sheriff’s Office.” “We are very excited for her and her new adventures.” “We are also very pleased to have Kerri return to us.” “Her experiences and training will be of great benefit to the citizens of Lincoln County.”

Sheriff Dotson also stated, “We’re honored that first Kerri and now Jackie have been recruited by the Humane Society.” “When you hire professional people with good character and work ethics, they will do great things and often, these things are recognized by others.”
