Incident: Man convicted of Attempted Aggravated Murder of a Lincoln County Deputy

Summary:

On Monday, June 23, 2008 Kory Christian Pederson, 37, of Dayton went on trial in Lincoln County for the Attempted Aggravated Murder of a Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy. He had been indicted approximately one year ago by a Lincoln County Grand Jury on charges of Attempted Aggravated Murder, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest, Pointing a Firearm at Another, Menacing and Possession of Cocaine.

On Friday, June 27, 2008 the jury found Kory Christian Pederson guilty of all charges.

On Wednesday, July 02, 2008 Pederson was sentenced to the 120 months, the maximum sentence allowed in this case.

Just over a year agon on June 16, 2007 Deputy Chris Miller was contacting Kory Pederson who was camping unlawfully in Lost Creek Day Use State Park just south of Newport.

Pederson came outside of his motor home and became uncooperative and threatening. Deputy Miller attempted to detain him and Pederson fled into the motorhome.

Pederson was able to retrieve a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun and fired rounds at Deputy Miller in the hallway. The rounds narrowly missed Deputy Miller who was able to return fire. One round struck Pederson in the hand, knocking the gun to the floor.

After medical treatement Pederson was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail.

The Lincoln County Major Crime team, made up of the Sheriff's Office, Newport Police, Oregon State Police, Lincoln City Police, Toledo Police and the District Attorneys Office, conducted the investigation.
