Incident: Inmate Work Crew
Date Occurred: February 27, 2008
Time Occurred:
Location: Lincoln County Jail

Summary:

On February 27, 2008 three inmates currently serving time in the Lincoln County Jail participated in an outdoor work project in conjunction with the Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District, a non-profit governmental agency.

The three inmates worked all day at a local nursery which is leased by the Soil and Water Conservation District for the purpose of providing plants to the various agencies who perform riparian enhancement throughout Lincoln County.

The inmates separated over 1,700 ferns which had been sitting in one gallon containers for so many years that they had virtually grown together into one huge root mass.

This inmate work venture not only facilitated Sheriff Dotson's goal of exploring more creative incarceration venues, but it also gave the inmates a personal sense of accomplishment. Soil and Water Conservation District staff were extremely pleased with the work performed and very thankful for the help. The assistance from the inmates pushed up the time table for filling many orders much sooner than would otherwise have been possible.
