Incident: Mentally ill subject taken into custody
Date Occurred: February 28, 2008
Time Occurred: Approximately 11:30 am
Location: Salmon River Highway, Rose Lodge, OR.

Summary:

On February 28, 2008, at 11:26 AM, Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy David Boys was dispatched to 4773 Salmon River Highway, Otis, OR regarding an out-of-control mental subject. Deputy Boys was advised the subject's name was Dwayne A. Henderson, 27 years old, of Otis. While responding, the deputy received updated information that Henderson's mother was at the Rose Lodge convenience store, reporting she had been assaulted by Henderson.

Deputy Boys arrived at the store, but only found the mother's vehicle parked awkwardly with the keys in it. According to a witness, the mother had left on foot. Deputy Boys, assisted by Lincoln City Police Officers, began checking the surrounding roads. Deputy Boys located Henderson's mother approximately a mile away on Salmon River Highway. Dwayne Henderson was obesrevd walking ahead of her along the highway. Deputy Boys stopped eastbound highway traffic and attempted to take Henderson into custody. Henderson resisted these efforts and the deputy deployed his taser. Henderson continued resisting and fled on foot eastbound on the highway.

Deputy Boys pursued Henderson on foot. Two unknown motorists who were watching became involved in the event and momentarily detained Henderson. Deputy Boys re-deployed the taser on Henderson. Lincoln City Police Officers then arrived on scene and Henderson was taken into custody without further incident. Henderson suffered only minor injuries as a result of his resisting, but was transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital for observation and treatment.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office could not have been successful in this incident without the involvement of citizens (good samaritans) who came to the deputy's aid. Unfortunately in the aftermath, the citizens left before Deputy Boys could thank them. If anyone has information regarding these good samaritans, please contact the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office so they can be recognized for their contributions to the community's safety.
