Summary:
During a routine visual inspection of the maximum security unit, Leonard Bittner, age 53 of Newport was witnessed by deputies attempting to lower himself from a railing with a blanket wrapped around his neck. As he attempted to lower himself, the knots on the blanket started to slip and he fell approximately 24 inches to the floor. Deputies immediately responded and instructed Mr. Bittner to return to his cell. After several verbal instructions from staff to cell in, Mr. Bittner refused to comply and advised that he was “doing it again”. A taser was deployed for the safety of this individual.
Medical assistance was provided by jail medical staff and no further treatment was needed.
Mr. Bittner was placed on suicide watch for his own protection. Mr. Bittner is currently in custody on charges of Assault II; Strangulation; Criminal Mischief II; Possession of Methamphetamine; Unlawful use of a Weapon and Menacing. He is scheduled for sentencing on Monday March 3, 2008.
