Summary:
On January 17, 2008 at approximately 3:55pm, Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Derek Etheridge was dispatched to a reported school bus versus car traffic collision in the 700 Block of NE Newport Heights Drive in Newport, OR. Deputies arrived on scene at approximately 4:03pm and observed a green 2001 Honda Civic off the road facing into the opposing lane, and a school bus parked near a driveway approximately 30 feet from Honda's location.
The initial investigation by Sheriff's Deputies revealed the driver of the passenger car, a 16 year old female, failed to negotiate a left hand curve as she traveled southbound, causing her vehicle to cross the centerline of the road. Her vehicle struck the left front corner of the northbound school bus, causing her to spin into the ditch.
The female was transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital where she was treated for her injuries. Four of the children on the school bus were transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and were subsequently released. The driver of the passenger car was issued a citation for Failure to Drive in Right Lane.
Members of the Newport Fire Department, Newport Police, Central Coast Ambulance and Lincoln County School District assisted at the scene.
