Summary:
Your Lincoln County Sheriff's Office received a generous grant from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund to purchase two patrol mountain bicycles. The bicycles were purchased at the beginning of summer and were used for several activities during the summer months, including the Siletz Pow Wow, Seafood and Wine Festival, and the Depoe Bay Salmon Bake. The bicycles were also successfully used during a theft investigation focused in the Waldport area.
The concept of bicycle patrol has been around for several years. A deputy on a bicycle is highly mobile, and able to respond quickly in heavy foot or vehicular traffic, yet is far more approachable than a deputy in a patrol vehicle. The deputy can provide focused patrols in problem areas and can check areas they might otherwise overlook from a patrol vehicle. The bicycle-mounted deputy is able to respond quickly and silently to an area, many times without being noticed.
Your Sheriff's Office currently has eight deputies trained and certified to ride mountain bikes on patrol.
