Summary:
On March 28, 2007 our Sheriff's Office received notice of a successful Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Grant in the amount of $3,964.00. This is the second year our Sheriff's Office has been successful in receiving this grant. The grant is funded by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition.
The Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Grant will provide overtime funds for Sheriff's Deputies to enforce pedestrian safety laws at crosswalks. Sheriff's Deputies will participate in at least three pedestrian safety operations around Lincoln County later this year.
A pedestrian safety operation is an intensive direct team law enforcement activity conducted at or near targeted pedestrian crossing locations. The team generally will include an observer, a decoy pedestrian, and an adequate number of chase deputies to maximize the number of violator contacts. Although the primary focus of the operations are specific pedestrian related violations, any observed safety related Vehicle Code violation may be addressed.
Motorists are cautioned to be alert of the right of way laws concerning pedestrians. Motorists must be aware that crosswalks exist at any public street intersection, whether marked with paint or unmarked and under Oregon laws, a driver has specific duties to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. When turning at a traffic signal, drivers must stop and remain stopped for pedestrians until they have cleared the lane into which the vehicle is turning and at least six feet of the next lane. At other crosswalks drivers must stop and remain stopped for pedestrians until they have cleared the lane in which the vehicle is traveling and the next lane.
Last year the compliance rate increased from 83% during the first pedestrian safety enforcement operation to 87% during the last operation. Our goal is to increase awareness and provide a safe environment for our citizens and visitors. The dates of the operations and more information will be provided in the future.
