Summary:
On January 21, 2005 at about 2:05 AM, a Lincoln County Deputy Sheriff was traveling south on Hwy 101 at the intersection of NE 20th St, Newport, OR, when alerted by the honking horn of another vehicle at that location. The deputy turned his patrol car around and contacted a citizen who said his vehicle was almost hit by another vehicle, while waiting at the intersection light. The deputy was told that the suspect vehicle drove into the parking lot of Safeway Food & Drug, and parked in front of that business. The citizen then pointed out the suspect vehicle to the deputy.
The Sheriff's deputy, with assistance from Newport police, made contact with driver of the suspect vehicle, Newport resident, Mark Anthony Navarro, 27 years of age. Navarro was still sitting in the drivers' seat of his vehicle when contacted and showed signs of alcohol impairment. When the deputy's investigation was complete, Navarro was arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and transported to the Lincoln County Jail where he provided a breath sample showing his blood alcohol content to be 0.25%. Navarro was lodged in jail on $7,500.00 bail. Navarro was also issued a traffic citation for Driving While Suspended and his vehicle was towed from the scene.
