Summary:
On January 11th, 2007, at about 11:15 p.m., Deputy Chris Miller of your Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office was driving his patrol car west on Hwy 34 near mile post one in Waldport, Oregon. An approaching truck driving east on Hwy 34, pulling a trailer began to swerve into Deputy Miller’s lane and forced him to go off the road to avoid a crash.
Deputy Miller conducted a traffic stop on the truck’s driver, Leslie James Chaney, age 44 of South Beach, Oregon. Deputy Miller determined that the trailer was not properly secured because there was a lock on the hitch preventing it from being attached to the truck correctly.
After conducting an investigation, Deputy Miller placed Chaney under arrest for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. Chaney ran from Deputy Miller, east on Hwy 34 from the location, but was taken into custody after a foot chase and brief struggle on the side of the highway. Deputy Miller deployed a Taser during the incident.
Sgt. Adam Shanks of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist, and was able to determine that the trailer Chaney was towing was stolen from a job site in Waldport, just prior to Deputy Miller stopping Chaney. The trailer was returned to the owner.
Chaney was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail for Reckless Driving, Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Escape III, Resisting Arrest, and Unlawful Use of a Vehicle. Chaney’s bail was set at $55,000.
