Summary:
On September 21st, 2006 at approximately 7:00pm, Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy John Beckwith responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in Otis. Upon arrival, Deputy Beckwith found a female laying on the front deck of the residence with a gunshot wound to her left foot. The female told Deputy Beckwith that a male subject broke into her residence and fired one round that struck her in the foot. Deputy Beckwith located a firearm at the residence and secured it as evidence.
Additional deputies responded to the location along with members of the Oregon State Police and Lincoln City Police Department to assist with the investigation. The female was transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City for treatment.
During the investigation, Lincoln County Sheriff's Detective Trish Miller contacted the injured female at the hospital. During an interview, the female, Jessica Marie Makin, age 23 of Bellevue, WA, disclosed to Detective Miller that she was handling the firearm inside the residence when it accidentally discharged, striking her in the foot. Makin confirmed no one had entered her residence as she initially reported.
Deputy Beckwith responded to the hospital and issued Makin a criminal citation for Initiating a false report. Makin was released at the hospital for further medical treatment.
